On February 27, 1932, Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor was born in London, England. Taylor, one of the most well-known movie stars, had a career spanning more than six decades by taking on parts that not only displayed her beauty but also her capacity to embody emotionally complex characters.

When Taylor was born, her American parents—who were both art dealers—were living in London. The Taylors returned to the United States shortly after World War II began and established their new life in Los Angeles.

Taylor was born to perform. Prior to being married, her mother was a working actress. The child Taylor began dancing at the age of 3 and finally performed a recital for Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret. A family friend suggested the Taylors’ daughter undergo a screen test soon after they moved to California.

Child Star

She signed a contract with Universal Studios shortly after and, at the age of 10, made her film debut in There’s One Born Every Minute (1942). Later, she played a significant role in the 1944 films The White Cliffs of Dover and Lassie Come Home, both of which were released in the same year.

Taylor worked on the role for four months, but it wasn’t until 1944’s National Velvet that she made her breakthrough. The film went on to be a great hit, earning more than $4 million, and the 12-year-old actress became a well-known figure.

The teenage actress proved in the glare of the Hollywood spotlight that she was more than capable of navigating the perilous terrain of notoriety. Even more impressive was the fact that Taylor demonstrated she could segue smoothly into more mature parts, unlike so many child stars before and after her.

Her stunning looks helped. At just 18 she played opposite Spencer Tracy in Father of the Bride (1950). Taylor also showed her acting talents in 1954 with three films: The Last Time I Saw Paris, Rhapsody, and Elephant Walk, the latter of which saw Taylor take on the role of a plantation owner’s wife who is in love with the farm’s manager.
